The Katsura tree, native to Japan and China, is famous for its heart-shaped leaves that emerge reddish purple in spring, mature to medium green with a slight bluish tinge in summer, and turn stunning shades of gold, orange and red in fall. Although not aromatic when attached to the tree, fallen autumn leaves have been described as smelling of cinnamon, burnt sugar or ripe apples.

In 2018, six trees were planted in a row farther from wires, so the electric company won’t prune the trees when they achieve maturity. Since such service providers’ main goal when pruning trees is to get branches out of the wires, specimens are sometimes damaged in the process. Always consider carefully the height and shape of any tree before planting it along roadways or power corridors, so the tree will be compatible with the available space.
